Video Edits:
One of the first changes being implemented is the elimination of condition codes for video edits (CalAPA Condition Codes B2A–H: The specific video clip is NOT "continuous and unedited" or B2I: More than one video clip is NOT "continuous and unedited"). This means candidates are now permitted to submit edited videos, with the understanding that if edits interfere with an assessor's ability to accurately score the submission, the assessment may be returned to the candidate or scored at a level 1.
Commission staff would like to offer some clarifications regarding video edits:
-
The expectation is that video edits will be made only to ensure all components of a cycle are included within the time limit. (For example, in Cycle 2, when meeting with members of their community of practice, a candidate may choose to edit out parts of videos of their meetings 1–3 that do not specifically address the intended purpose of the video or do not support the annotations. In Cycle 3, a candidate may edit the video to show where they meet with their volunteer teacher in both the pre- and post-observation meetings.)
-
Edits should be minimal.
-
Edits should not distract from the meeting (e.g., background effects or added titles that distract from the assessor's ability to view the required evidence should not be added).
-
Edits must not interfere with the meaning, viewing, or sound quality of the video clip.
The following types of edits may not result in a condition code; however, they are strongly discouraged.
-
Adding flashy titles, animations, or special effects
-
Inserting background music or sound effects
- Using scrolling text, added commentary, or artificial transitions
The changes outlined above are effective for any CalAPA submitted on or after March 14, 2025, and will be reflected in the May 1st or later score reports.
